Dr. Goreczny completed his Bachelor of Science in psychology and philosophy with a minor in computer science from the University of Pittsburgh. He earned his Master degree and Ph.D. in psychology from Louisiana State University, having completed his predoctoral internship at Brown University Medical School. Dr. Goreczny has over 30 years of academic teaching, research experience, and academic service in administrative roles and on various faculty committees (including Institutional Review Board, Health Professions Advisory Committee, and Faculty Review Committee).
Dr. Goreczny has published several peer-reviewed articles and given over 100 presentations in areas related to health psychology, educational assessment, interprofessional education, and quality of life factors related to individuals who have an intellectual disability. He has also published several book chapters, edited two books, and served as journal and conference proposal reviewer. In addition, he served as principal investigator for a grant-funded program focused on improving quality of life for individuals with an intellectual disability, having overseen the $10 million program for 25 years.
Despite his publication and research-related experiences, Dr. Goreczny has most enjoyed the teaching component of his career, including classroom teaching, individual mentoring, team research meetings, and clinical supervision. Courses taught have included basic science courses (e.g., Statistics and Research Methods), foundational courses (e.g., Biopsychology), advanced clinical courses (e.g., Interventions in Heath Psychology) and specific practice-related courses (e.g., Professional Integration Seminar – focused on ethical and legal practice).
Dr. Goreczny has been active in both his professional and local communities. He has served as American Psychological Association (APA) representative to the Human Genome Project and on the APA Continuing Professional Education Committee (including Chair of the Committee). In addition, he has served on the Board of Directors for CLASS (Community Living and Support Services), Spina Bifida Association of Western Pennsylvania, and Pittsburgh Schweitzer Fellowship Program (PSFP) and has served as mentor to PSFP Fellows. Community involvement has included being baseball, basketball, and softball coach for youth sports teams and in various leadership roles for the Boys Scouts of America. He helped facilitate development of the first female troop in his area and has received the mentorship pin for over 20 Eagle Scouts, including the first female Eagle Scout in the troop/district/council. He feels fortunate to have a loving wife of many years and three tremendous adult children. His primary recreational activities include camping, hiking, and most any outdoor activities as well as watching college and professional sporting activities.
