Saba Holds 2022 Research Day

Research Day
On March 18, Saba University School of Medicine held its annual Research Day which saw students and faculty members come together to share and celebrate their scientific research.
On the day, the first, second and third placed student research projects were announced after a poster presentation from each student where the audience asked questions and engaged in conversations about their research. After the presentations, students were asked questions about their research from a panel of judges, who then awarded the top three research projects.
The 2022 Research Day winners were:
- Melanie Horsburgh – Lipofilling in Breast Reconstructive Surgery Post – Mastectomy Women, A literature review
- Christina Carfagnini – Do Lactobacillus and Bifidobacterium containing probiotics present Gestational Diabetes Mellitus in obese and overweight patients.
- Christopher McClean – Asymptomatic Severe Aortic Stenosis: Making the case for Early Surgery.
The winner of Research Day wrote a stellar piece of literature review that concluded that Lipofilling used in breast reconstruction following mastectomies offers promising results to women diagnosed with breast cancer.
Research Day 2022 provided an opportunity for students to share research, receive feedback and find inspiration in person, as well as learn about relevant research questions which are being explored in the medical field.
While studying at Saba University School of Medicine, students learnt how to carry out individual research as it is an integral aspect of the Basic Science program. One of the main advantages that Research day has been that it helps students gain a competitive edge during the residency application process and gain the scientific reasoning skills for them to excel in the most rigorous training programs. It should also be noted that Saba University School of Medicine is one of the only schools in the Caribbean to offer such studies. Congratulations to everyone who participated and attended this year’s event.
